Tiki Torch Dash

Despite chilly temps Saturday night over 40 racers lined up, headlamps shining, for the first annual Tiki Torch Dash.  The relay was the first heat of the night, and the action was quite fast paced.  Because racers were doing multiple laps it always seemed like someone was flying in to the transition area and it made for great spectating.

In the end, the Montanians Ben Parsons and Brendan French proved to be the fastest team with Reiner Thoni and Ian Gale of Golden 36 seconds behind and James Minifie and Stano Faban pulling in the bronze.

At 9 o’clock the weary racers lined up again for the solo vertical race.  The course was cut short due to late timing and dangerously low temps but was an entertaining battle non the less, with Reiner Thoni owning first place right from the start line, Brendan French taking second and James Minifie rallying to third.  On the women’s side Mel Bernier turned heads with her blazing fast time for first, Julie Matteau for second and Billie Velisek for third.

The relay awards

All were pleased with the opening of the Canadian race calendar, many thanks go out to our sponsors KHMR, Golden Physiotherapy Clinic, Tracey for keeping the good tunes playing, the diligent(cold resistant) volunteers and all the racers for their positive energy.  We can’t wait for next year’s Tiki.
