6TH ANNUAL SUNSHINE 5000

…the 2nd Event of 2010 in the Canadian Ski Mountaineering Cup

SKI MOUNTAINEERING COMPETITION CANADA WILL HOST THE SECOND RACE OF THEIR NATIONAL CUP CALENDAR WITH THE UPCOMING “MEC/SUNSHINE 5000” RACE AT SUNSHINE SKI AREA, BANFF ON SATURDAY 06 FEBRUARY 2010.

The canadian national ski mountaineering cup will then climax after 2 further events in british columbia. The overall Cup winner will be declared following the final National Championship event at Kicking Horse Mountain Resort near Golden, British Columbia on the 3rd of April 2010.

The races for February 6th at Sunshine will be set and organized by a group headed by the Alpine Club of Canada, and run under slightly relaxed international rules. This exciting competition format highlights skills for both ascent and descent on skis, employing skis, skins, and Alpine Touring or Telemark bindings. Competitors carry backcountry essentials such as avalanche transceivers, packs, probes, and shovels, as well as supplementary clothing and emergency supplies, racing a marked course of several kilometers that requires changes in terrain and technique. Full details, rules, and registration are available via the event website, at www.alpineclubofcanada.ca/ccc/ismc. Shorter, easier CITIZEN, and INTRODUCTORY races will be run on easier courses at the same time.

Apart from the sheer fun of pushing hard and skiing fast over a wild mountain route, there will be prizes for winners. More than $2500 in cash and gear from sponsors MEC, Valhalla Pure, Red Bull, Backcountrysafety.com, Sunshine Ski Resort, The Alpine Club of Canada, and Ortovox, among others will be awarded.

Come out for the contest, and the party. Dare your usual ski friends, challenge your mountain business associates, or just come out to learn more about this great and traditional kind of ski racing.

  1. ryan and I were up at Sunshine today, looking at course possibilities – we are now planning on doing it a little differently than the map published above. We’re thinking we’ll start and finish at Goats Eye Garden, the mid-station on the Gondola, and go with a slightly more exciting climb through the woods north of where the course usually starts. Then like in past years, more or less, but with the inclusion of Delirium Dive, accessed by foot over the top of Lookout Mtn. More exciting finish, if snow conditions hold and allow us to put people down there. Should also allow more racers to hang around the finish once they’re done, rather than having to leave the area to warm up.

  2. Sounds really cool Dave, I’ll be up there on friday to pre-run, I’ll try to touch base to see if you need a hand with the setup.

  3. So…..same vertical just with a much longer, more technical first climb and race ends on a descent rather than a climb?? Oooooo….I’ll be coming in to Goat’s Eye Garden…hot, hot, hot!!!
