The Dogtooth Dash 2011 Race Report

The 2011 Dogtooth Dash was a supreme success, the fastest Canadian racers lined up to duke it out in the Canadian National Championship Race.  The weather was a challenge for course setters with 9 cm’s of fresh snow falling that morning but the heroic Mountain Safety Department stepped up to bat.  The course was really technical this year with world cup style skinning and challenging variable conditions on the descents.  The new section of course was very well received as an aesthetic bonus that brought racers through Kicking Horse Mountain’s new in bounds terrain Superbowl and Terminator 2 peak.

The race was a furious battle with a few upsets resulting from racers pushing hard, broken bindings, BIG crashes and many fouled skins all sidelined racers or slowed them to a limp.

In the Mens Elite race Reiner Thoni showed what he was made of once again, taking a decisive lead on the third ascent and took home the big cheque, Andrew Mcnab tapped into his manimalistic primal power and chased Reiner to second place with Ian Gale clinging onto third.  The women’s race ended with Mel Bernier as first Elite woman across the line and showed the guys what she was made of with a third overall finish, Julie Matteau grabbed second place and Golden’s favorite skimo racer Billie Velisek finished in third place.

  1. Once again, Kicking Horse and Golden Skimo outdid themselves with the 2011 Dogtooth Dash. Over the last few seasons, I have raced all over North America and Europe and I find the Dash to be second to none in all aspects. The course is beautiful and the Eagle Eye banquet is unique world wide.
I too want to thank all the volunteers that helped with the race on Saturday. Without you there would be no Skimo in Canada and we are all grateful.

  2. I have to agree with James even though I saw chalets at very nice places before :)) However, at the KHMR and Dogtooth all things come together, especially, the cherry on the cake is the hospitality and friendliness of the people making it happen.

Thank you guys very much and see you next year.

    • Thanks guys, I appreciate it! I was really happy with how the race came together. I’m trying to get my hands on some pics of the relay race for another blog post on that too. Thanks for your support!

  3. I want to say the same thing about the last week-end!! It was perfect in every aspect of the race. After a long break (6 years) i went to race again and i made a good decision to start at Kicking Horse!!
Thank you Ian for making my come back to be a positve one and for sure see you guys next year….If every skimo racer could take another new person for next year , that would be the biggest result!!
One more thanks and wish you guys a happy summer…Karoly and the girls…
