Crested Butte : Red Lady Mtn

As part of our acclimatization the gang decided to head over to a local ski-touring area called “Red Lady”.  It’s a favorite of CB locals because it’s close and there’s abundant safe tree skiing, and with the difficult avalanche conditions around here right now we were looking for a low consequence spot to go where we could keep the exposure to a minimum.

We slapped our skins on at 2700 meters and started up through the Aspens to a low angle ridge with sparse shrubby spruce that remind me of the south-facing slopes back home in the Purcells.

Topping out at 3700 m the fantastic views of Crested Butte and surrounding area made up for the sporty skiing back to the car.  Now back to the Condo for some grub and R&R in preparation for the 3 days of racing starting Saturday with a time trail sprint race, followed by the 1300m individual race.  Times for both these races will be added together to crown the North American Champ.  After the two main events we’ll be stopping at Winter Park resort on the way home for a short race called “Wasatch against the World” at the SIA tradeshow.

A big weekend of racing and travelling, it’s been great to check out Crested Butte and the locals have been really friendly.  We’ve been spending a couple of hours each day skinning up the resort as they have an uphill skiing policy that allows uphill traffic outside of operating hours, it’s awesome to see 40 people every morning out for exercise before work.
